What are Earth’s major hemispheres?
Wow! Do you see all that snow coming down!” All that snow wouldn’t be coming down if there was no spheres. What is a sphere? Well, there are 4 major spheres that make up Antarctica, and all of Earth! The four spheres are, the biosphere, the geosphere, the atmosphere, and, the hydrosphere. There is so much to learn about all these spheres. So come along, and find out about the 4 spheres that make up Antarctica!
Biosphere
A biosphere sounds like its a bouncy ball. Well it’s way too big to bounce with! A biosphere is the sphere of all living things. So, animals and plants would be counted in the biosphere because they are living things. Some animals and plants of Antarctica are, penguins, orcas, blue whales, algae, wild flowers, and so much more. The biosphere is really important in Antarctica. Without it, there would be no plants or animals. Without plants and animals, there wouldn’t be and Antarctica! So you might say that a biosphere is very important in any ecosystem.
Geosphere
The geosphere is another sphere. A geosphere is all non-living things. So it would be rocks, soil, and even volcanoes! Some things that are part of the geosphere in Antarctica is, rocks, and soil. Soil in Antarctica only is visible in the summer. It’s still there during winter, but it’s under all the ice and snow. Rocks are there all year round. But you might have to dig through some snow to find them!
Atmosphere
The atmosphere is air, clouds, and gas. The air in Antarctica is so cold because Antarctica is all the way at the bottom of the Earth. There are also a lot of clouds in the sky. That’s where all the snow comes from. So without clouds, there would be no snow. No snow, it wouldn’t be Antarctica! There is not a lot of heat in Antarctica. So no volcanoes or anything with lava. But there are still gas.
Hydrosphere
What do you think the word hydro means? It’s ok if you don’t know. Your going to learn soon! The word hydro means water. It can be frozen or hot water, but it’s still means hydro. So the hydrosphere is all water. But did you know that there’s water in the air? There sure is! The water in the air, comes from the clouds. It’s crazy to think that there’s water all around you. In Antarctica, most of the water is frozen. Except, the ocean. There are big ice glaciers there. They look like big chunks of ice. It feels like your in a glass of water with lots of ice! In the summer, some of the ice melts. But there is still a lot. It’s very important that there’s water in Antarctica. If there was no water, the plants and animals would have no water to drink. Or ice to eat. Also, some animals live in water. So if there was no water, some animals would not have homes. So it’s very important that there is water in Antarctica.
Did you learn about the four spheres?
So, did you learn about the four spheres? Now you might know more about the planet more than you’d ever think you’d know! The four spheres are very different but still work together to create Earth. Without the four spheres, Earth would be a whole lot different. Also, now you know that your part of the biosphere!
